More than 500 People Living with HIV (PLHIV) have benefitted from a wide range of empowerment initiatives implemented by the Lagos State AIDS Control Agency (LSACA), underscoring the Lagos State Government’s continued dedication to strengthening social and economic support systems for affected individuals.

This milestone was emphasized on Monday during a specially organised Empowerment Programme held at the Lagos State House of Assembly Pavilion, Alausa — an event forming part of activities to mark the 2025 World AIDS Day.

The 2025 edition of the Awareness Walk and Empowerment Programme, themed “Overcoming Disruptions; Sustaining Nigeria’s HIV Response,” brought together beneficiaries, community leaders, development partners, civil society organisations, and health professionals. Their presence reinforced the state’s long-standing commitment to resilience, empowerment, and improved quality of life for PLHIV across Lagos.

Delivering the keynote address, the Permanent Secretary, Office of the Chief of Staff, Mr. Kadiri Semiu Oluwasanu, commended Lagos State’s remarkable strides in reducing HIV infection rates. He attributed the progress to strengthened healthcare systems, consistent statewide interventions, and deep-rooted community engagement.

Mr. Kadiri stressed that continuous advancement toward an HIV-free Lagos requires unwavering collaboration among government agencies, partners, and citizens. He described World AIDS Day — observed globally on December 1st — as a moment of reflection, remembrance, and renewed commitment to supporting PLHIV while advocating for universal access to comprehensive healthcare. He reaffirmed the Lagos State Government’s resolve to ensure that no individual is left behind in the ongoing HIV response.

Earlier in her remarks, the Chief Executive Officer of LSACA, Dr. Folakemi Animashaun, highlighted empowerment as a critical tool in reducing vulnerability and promoting long-term self-reliance among PLHIV.

She announced that the 2025 empowerment package comprised sewing machines, deep freezers, ovens, gas cookers, hair dryers, sterilizers, and cash support for elderly beneficiaries.

Dr. Animashaun noted that meaningful HIV support goes beyond clinical treatment. According to her, economic empowerment restores dignity, fosters hope, and promotes independence among beneficiaries. She reaffirmed that LSACA’s empowerment initiative — an annual World AIDS Day tradition — equips PLHIV with sustainable resources to improve their livelihoods.

“Today’s programme reflects our dedication to ensuring that beneficiaries not only survive but thrive socially and economically. We remain committed to building healthier, stronger, and more self-reliant communities across Lagos,” she said.

She further stated that the initiative aligns with the Lagos State Government’s long-term vision of eliminating stigma and discrimination while promoting inclusion, equality, and opportunity for all citizens.

With the combined impact of the Awareness Walk and the Empowerment Programme, LSACA has once again reaffirmed the Lagos State Government’s commitment to working collaboratively with communities, stakeholders, and development partners to drive progress toward an HIV-free generation.
