FORMAL RESPONSE BY A COMMUNITY MEMBER FROM IGBO NLA, ILAJE, ON ALLEGATIONS AGAINST OSOPADEC SECRETARY

I, Ayoola Okunomo, write as a concerned indigene and community stakeholder from Igbo Nla in Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, in reaction to recent media publications and public insinuations alleging the misappropriation of ₦400,000,000 involving the Secretary of the Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC), Princess Abike Bayo-Ilawole.

1. Position as an Observer and Community Stakeholder

As a member of an oil-producing community directly affected by the activities and interventions of OSOPADEC, I consider it necessary to speak from the standpoint of fairness, objectivity, and community interest. While I am not an official of the Commission, I am a beneficiary and observer of its programs and administrative conduct.

2. Concern Over Unverified Allegations

The allegations currently circulating in sections of the media appear, at this stage, to be unsubstantiated and speculative. Public institutions and their officers should not be condemned solely on the basis of rumours, incomplete information, or politically motivated narratives without credible evidence or lawful findings.

3. Importance of Due Process and Institutional Integrity

Matters involving public finance and accountability are serious and must be handled through proper investigative and judicial channels. Resorting to trial by media risks damaging reputations, undermining institutional credibility, and creating unnecessary tension within the communities that depend on OSOPADEC’s developmental mandate.

4. Community Interest and Developmental Focus

Communities in Ilaje, including Igbo Nla, are primarily concerned with sustained development, transparency, and continuity of projects that improve living standards. Prolonged controversy without verified facts can distract from the core mission of delivering infrastructure, social amenities, and economic opportunities to oil-producing areas.

5. Call for Lawful Scrutiny, Not Public Vilification

If there are genuine concerns or grievances, the appropriate anti-corruption and oversight bodies established by law remain the proper avenues for redress. Allegations should be investigated professionally and discreetly, ensuring fairness to all parties involved while preserving public confidence in governance structures.

6. Appeal for Responsibility in Public Discourse

Media organisations, political actors, and commentators are urged to exercise restraint and responsibility in their publications. Sensational reporting without factual backing can inflame public opinion, distort truth, and erode trust in institutions meant to serve the people.

Conclusion

As a community member from Igbo Nla, Ilaje, my position is not to defend wrongdoing, if any exists, but to advocate fairness, due process, and responsible public engagement. Accountability must be pursued, but it must be pursued lawfully, transparently, and without prejudice.
